Products and services we provide - - -

In the same way that Alexander Levy's Mercantile, back in 1894, stocked a wide variety of merchandise to serve the community, Dunsmuir Hardware today has a wide and varied assortment of products and services for our customers.  Its not practical to list every item for you but here is a summary.

 HARDWARE. It's more than just a part of our name.  It's the traditional foundation of our business.  The term implies solid and durable items and makes one think of brackets and braces and hinges and all those sorts of things.  Dunsmuir Hardware has an assortment of those items that would make Alexander Levy jealous.  Our major supplier of these necessities is NATIONAL HARDWARE, a subsidiary of the STANLEY CORPORATION.  Many items come in a variety of finishes (brass, galvanized, nickle, etc) and different sizes.  We have hinges, for example, ranging from 3/4 inch to 8 inches.  Fasteners such as nails, screws, nuts and bolts are a major part of our hardware selection and there are literally hundreds of types and sizes.

HOUSEWARES.  Think of it as hardware for the home.  Traditionally a big part of the hardware business and still is.  Kitchen tools and gadgets like can openers, paring knives, flour sifters and egg slicers are just one part of this department.  Cookware; pots and pans of all types including Revere Ware, Corning Ware, Pyrex, Mirro, and other manufacturers are intermingled with ladles, spatulas and potato mashers.  Household cleaners are another major part of this department and include window cleaners, cleansers, polishes, degreasers, drain cleaners and a lot of specialty cleaners too numerous to list.  We try to keep up to date on new items in this area and bring them to you as fast as we can.

PAINT.  It involves a whole lot more than just a bucket of paint.  Our brand is True Value Hardware's own and we're very happy with it.  It consistently is rated very high by consumer testing magazines, our customers like it, its reasonably priced, and we use it ourselves.  We can supply literally hundreds of colors in exterior, interior, flat, eggshell, satin, semi-gloss, gloss, latex (water base) and oil base products.  All of the necessary paint accessories are here too - brushes, rollers, masking tape, drop cloths, spackle, sandpaper and more.  In addition, we stock a nice selection of wood stains for both exterior (decks, siding, etc.) and for interior (furniture) use.

GARDENING.  Three groups of products make up this department; (1) tools, (2) chemicals and fertilizers, and (3) accessories.  Gardening tools have changed very little in the past couple of centuries.  Shovels and rakes and hoes have been right there with axes and mauls and cultivators since your grandfather's day - and still are.  Our assortment of these important tools is broad.  Chemicals and fertilizers are a constantly changing product line and we stay up to date by offering the newest.  Development of "green" products and biodegradable and safe products brings new garden and lawn products although we continue to stock the older well proven ones as well.  Garden and lawn accessories is a large segment of this product line.  Drip and sprinkler system parts, hoses and nozzles, clippers and shears. potting soils and pots,                                                    are just a few.

PLUMBING.  This is a big part of our business.  every home and every business has the occasional need for plumbing items whether it be a faucet washer, a water heater pop-off, a garbage disposal, a sump pump, a shower head, or a shut-off valve.  We carry the items needed for virtually any plumbing job including galvanized, copper, brass, pvc and abs pipe and fittings.  We also cut and thread pipe to your specifications.  Plumbing tools are here too - pipe wrenches, drain cleaners, basin wrenches, and so on.

SPORTING GOODS.  Our store is just two blocks from the Sacramento River and some fine rainbow trout fishing.  No wonder then that we stock the things necessary to go "catch em."  Lines, leaders, sinkers, lures, rods, reels, nets, hooks and all the accessories to go with them.  We're famous for our Canadian night crawlers - big and fat and we have them shipped to us by air from Canada.  Ammunition, targets, gun cleaning kits, lubricants, slings, holsters and other accessories round out our shooting sports section.  We also carry a nice selection of pocket knives, including quality knives from Buck, Case, Gerber, Frost and Schrade.  As a licensed Federal Firearms Dealer we can process any firearms transfer for you and can generally get just about any firearm that you might want.  Fishing and hunting licenses? We have them.

MODEL TRAINS.  We have one of the top model train departments in Northern California !  Our associate in this department is GOLDEN WEST HOBBIES, which is widely known for their fine custom work.  We specialize in modeling the local railroad lines - Union Pacific, Southern Pacific, McCloud River Railroad, and Yreka Western Railroad - and we have rolling stock from each of them.  Locomotives (both steam and diesel,) cabooses, flat cars, hoppers, boxcars, tank cars, and a variety of specialty cars in HO scale.  Track, roadbed, couplers, switches and other accessories round out the department.  We're an authorized WALTHERS dealer so have access to virtually anything for your model train layout.

MUSIC. Music?  In a hardware store?  Well we said we have a wide and varied assortment of products.  We became aware a number of years ago, that there was no music for sale in our town so we started carrying a small selection of cassette tapes (remember those?) and a few of those new fangled compact discs.  Now we have no cassettes and a sizable selection of CDs.  We have been accused of only carrying the music we personally like.  Yes - - - so?  All that means is that you won't find any gangsta rap or heavy metal in our assortment.

OFFICE SUPPLIES.  Another of those niches that we cover since nobody else in town does.  There is always a need for paper and pencils and envelopes and we stock the basics.  Our copy machine - ten cents per copy - is here for public use and gets a lot of it.  Computer printer / copier paper, notebooks, scissors, rulers, erasers, tape, labels, staples and all the other things needed for school, a small office or home business.

GOLD PANNING.  Yes you can pan gold in the Sacramento River right in the center of town.  You probably won't find any huge nuggets but gold flakes are fairly common and by exploring to the north or south, you may just "strike it rich."  Panning for gold is a growing hobby and lots of fun for families.  We stock gold pans and sluice boxes in various sizes, concentrators, sniffer bottles, specimen bottles, instruction books, maps, and everything you need to become a prospector. 

AND THAT'S NOT ALL - - - We haven't even mentioned our clothing (Dickies blue jeans, t-shirts, socks, jackets, hats and gloves), or our giftware (unusual and sometimes a bit quirky), or our electronics (telephones, audio and video cords and connectors and computer supplies), or our seasonal supplies (from ice melter in the winter to fertilizers in the summer).  If you don't see it here just ask - - - and if we don't have it we'll order it.
